La Tomatina

The festival of La Tomatina  is celebrated in the Valencian town of Buñol, Spain .In this festival people throw tomatoes at each other and enjoy. It is held the last Wednesday in August, during the week of festivities of Buñol.

Festivities begin with the first event of the Tomatina,at around 10 AM.The ham is kept on the top of greasy pole and the aim is to climb the greasy pole. The crowd is being showered  in  water from hoses. Once someone is able to drop the ham off the pole, the start signal for the tomato fight is given. The signal for the start is at about 11 when a loud shot rings out, and the chaos begins.

Several  trucks  throw tomatoes in large quantity in the Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are  cheap and are grown specially for the holidays, being of poorer taste. The use of goggles and gloves are suggested for the participants. To reduce the injury  it is suggested that the tomatoes must be crushed before being thrown .

After exactly one hour, the fight ends with the firing of the second shot, which announce the end. The whole town square is colored red and rivers of tomato juice flow freely. Fire Trucks hose down the streets and locals provide hoses to the participants  to remove the tomato paste from their bodies.
